How to turn on two-step sign-in

Add a code from an authenticator app to signing in, so someone who gets into your email still can't get into Gatherings.

Two-step sign-in is optional for everyone. With it on, signing in takes the email link or code and a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. Owners and Admins see a reminder on Home until they turn it on, because they can see other families' details.

Turn it on

  1. Install an authenticator app on your phone if you don't have one: Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password or similar.
  2. Open My family and scroll to Two-step sign-in.
  3. Tap Turn on two-step sign-in.
  4. In your authenticator app, add an account and scan the QR code. Can't scan? Type the key shown under it instead.
  5. Type the 6-digit code the app shows for Gatherings and tap Turn on.

Signing in with it on

Sign in as usual with the email link or code. Then you'll see One more step: open your authenticator app, type the code it shows for Gatherings, and tap Continue. Until you do, none of your family's or groups' information opens.

"That code didn't work"? Codes change every 30 seconds, so use the newest one. If they never work, make sure your phone sets its time automatically.

Turn it off

On My family, under Two-step sign-in, tap Turn off two-step sign-in and confirm.

Hide the reminder

On Home, tap Not now to hide the reminder on that device for 30 days.

Lost your phone or changed apps?

If you moved to a new phone, many authenticator apps can transfer your codes; check your app's help. Otherwise, contact support from the email address you sign in with. We'll check it's you and turn two-step sign-in off so you can set it up again.
