How to start a group

Create a private home for your co-op or support group, then work through the setup checklist.

Anyone with a household can start a group. You'll be its Owner.

Create it

  1. On Home, tap Start a group (or + Start another group).
  2. Give it a Name. The Web address fills in for you; change it if you like. It can't be changed later.
  3. Add a Short description and City or area (optional).
  4. Choose How do families join?:
    • Anyone with the link can ask; an admin approves
    • Only personal invites from an admin
    • Anyone with the link joins right away
  5. Choose Where is your group now?: BAND, A Facebook group, GroupMe or WhatsApp, A co-op website or spreadsheet or An email list or Google Group. If you pick one, your new group opens on the moving guide. Starting fresh? Leave it on Nowhere yet.
  6. Tick any Starter Circles you want: Parents, Field Trips, Park Days, Teens, Leadership. You'll lead each one.
  7. Tap Create group.

The setup checklist

Admins see a Getting started card at the top of the Feed. Each step ticks itself off:

  • Describe your group
  • Set up Circles (the starter Circles don't count until you add or change one)
  • Post a welcome announcement (the link opens a post with Announcement ticked)
  • Add your next event
  • Invite your families (ticks off when a family joins)
  • Add a co-admin
  • Set up co-op classes, if your group has them

The card goes away once everything is done, or tap Hide this list. Only Admins see it.

Moving from BAND, Facebook or another app?

Tap Moving from BAND, Facebook, a group chat or a co-op website? at the top of the checklist, or Settings → Move your group. The moving guide walks you through your member list, your events and a ready-to-post message. See How to move your group.

Next: Invite families.
