Roles: what Owners, Admins, Leaders, Members and Teens can do

Who can post announcements, plan events, invite families and change settings, and how to change someone's role.

Everyone in a group has a role. Roles belong to each adult, not the whole family.

What each role can do

  • Member: read and post on the Feed, comment, vote and start polls, RSVP, chat, send direct messages, share photos and files, and join open Circles. Admins can choose to let Members add events too, or to keep the Feed to Leaders' posts (see group settings).
  • Leader: everything a Member can, plus post announcements, approve families if the group allows it, pin posts, see who has read announcements, plan events, make sign-up sheets, and start Circles.
  • Admin: everything a Leader can, plus invite and approve families, change roles, change group settings, see every Circle, and delete other people's posts, comments, photos and files.
  • Owner: an Admin who started the group (or was handed it). The only one who can hand the group to someone else.
  • Teen: a teen (13 to 17) in a family's household. Teens can read the Feed and calendar, and post, comment and chat only in teen Circles. They can't answer events or sign-ups for the family, can't hold a role above Teen, and send direct messages only if a parent turns them on. See How teen accounts work.

Change someone's role

Owners and Admins can do this.

  1. Open the Families tab.
  2. Find the parent. Next to their name, pick Member, Leader or Admin from the menu. It saves straight away.

The Owner's role can't be changed here. To pass the group on, see How to change your group's settings.

Circle leaders

Each Circle can have its own leaders, separate from group roles. See How to use Circles.
